SCPRC FAQ

This FAQ has been designed to answer many common questions that our visitors/patrons often ask.

Question: Does the Parks and Recreation Commission operate all of the youth sports programs in Spartanburg County?
Answer: No. While the Parks and Recreation Commission does manage youth fall baseball and some Recreation Center based youth athletic programs, the majority of youth sports are administered by independent youth organizations. These organizations use Commission facilities but all revenues are managed by the Association.

Question: Where does Spartanburg rank in its investment in public parks and recreation?
Answer: Of the largest metropolitan areas in South Carolina, Spartanburg is last in its investment in public parks and recreation. The per capita expenditures per county are as follows: Charleston - $37.82; Lexington - $43.42; Richland - $45.92; Greenville - $25.43; and Spartanburg - $16.66.

Question: How is Parks and Recreation different as a Commission than as a County Department?
Answer: While County Council approves its tax milage and has final approval over land transactions, the Commission is an independently functioning agency governed by a board of five volunteer commissioners appointed by County Council. All taxes, fees, grants, and sponsorship funds go directly to parks and recreation expenses. The Commission is comprised of all the unincorporated areas of Spartanburg County as well as participating municipalities.

Question: Does Parks and Recreation collaborate with local schools to provide services?
Answer: Yes. The Commission offers ten nationally recognized After School programs and two Recreation Centers (Inman and Duncan Elementary) in Districts One and Five. It also has lease/use agreements for numerous ball fields and tennis courts at schools around Spartanburg County.
